She was recklessly brave and her heart was heavy with sorrow. In ordinary times, such a combination would be perilous. In a time of war, it could place her in mortal danger.
He was seated in his chambers when he switched on his communication device to address Éowyn alone. The memory of her behaviour around Lord Aragorn was fresh in his mind - and stung more than he had expected (or would care to admit) - but nothing would stop him from continuing to be a friend to her.
"My lady," he said, when he had finally gathered the courage to speak, "Your brother has told me something of the battle at Helm's Deep. How do you fare?"
